Cited in AI answers — and still there a year later
Proof that the method works — applied outside energy. For Elisto (elisto.org), a UK IT-training and consultancy provider, a targeted AEO strategy earned citations in AI answer engines for an emerging niche — AI-enabled agile business analysis — showing the client in the AI answer boxes, which sit above paid and traditional search, alongside far larger competitors. A year on, the published targeted content means they're still there.

Results
- Cited across two major AI engines — Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, from June–July 2025.
- Still cited a year later. Captured July 2026, Elisto remains cited among sources in Perplexity and is named in Google's AI Overview across multiple related queries — from targeted published content in 2025.
- Cited inside the AI answer boxes for the client's niche — above paid sponsored links and organic search.
- A notable share of voice alongside long-established, better-resourced competitors.
- Increased website traffic and brand awareness, as reported by the client.

Discovery
The engagement began with multiple consultancy sessions and an intensive study of the client's business — assessing their current brand awareness against competitors, reviewing demand across direct and adjacent searches (including "People Also Ask"), analysing present themes, and forecasting where trends were heading. From this we formed and tested hypotheses about where existing or new niches could be leveraged, particularly underserved ones. Four findings stood out:
- Valuable terminology. Deep search research surfaced key terms competitors weren't using — terms we could build content around to drive traffic to the client.
- A real differentiator. Most competitors led on certification and theory; this client excelled at practical, hands-on training — a strength we could emphasise.
- Market value trends. The client's sought-after specialisms were invisible in a noisy market of traditional offerings. The research showed these could carry more weight in campaigns to win greater presence.
- A new niche. We identified an emerging niche — AI-enabled agile business analysis — new to the client and with little competition, and made it a focus of targeted content, to great effect.
Strategy
These findings shaped the AEO strategy: what competitors were missing, where the client could prosper, and where emerging trends were beginning to shape search demand — validated against cross-market and industry research. Content was created to match high-value niche queries and adjacent topics, offering genuinely helpful, practical guidance, with a regular refresh of content paths to keep relevance high. Beyond the standard coverage (cost and competitor comparisons, salary reviews and the like), particular attention went to maximising the newly discovered niche.
Performance tracking
Performance was tracked throughout, with iterative change cycles applying each learning to the next content release. Monthly client consultations assessed observed results against expectations and strategy, and the conclusions fed directly into the next campaign.
Outcomes
The client earned a notable share of voice in the AI results boxes, appearing alongside top industry names with far larger budgets — a major win. The discovered niche, combined with current trends such as the rising implications of AI, yielded strong traffic, and the client took on more business.
The most telling result came a year on. In July 2026 — twelve months after the content went live — Elisto was still surfacing in the AI answers across both Perplexity and Google's AI Overview for its niche, from content published in 2025. That is the compounding nature of answer-engine visibility: unlike paid search, presence doesn't stop when spend stops.
“Transformed my business momentum, and continues to do so.”
Why this matters for energy vendors
Elisto is an IT-training firm, not an energy company — and that's the point. This engagement shows the AEO method works end to end, independent of sector. For energy-technology firms, the same method is applied with genuine engineering and energy-supply-chain fluency, so the content is accurate enough to be cited on technical questions — where a buyer asks which BMS supports open protocols, or how an EMS handles half-hourly settlement.
